Pavana No. 6 by Luis de Milan is intended for multiple levels, but can be done with level 4 students. There are many times where the melody is traded to a different part within a phrase and this can pose some rehearsal issues if not approached properly. Isolate measures such as measure 5 in parts 1 and 2. Also pay close attention to tempo fluctuation within eighth notes. A strong, deliberate part 3 will help to bring out the Renaissance character of the piece. Remember, the main focus of Level 4 is to read notes on the bass strings. Have all students read part 3.

Cultural/Historical Context:
Luis Milan, born 1500, was a Spanish composer who wrote for Viheula (an ancestor of the guitar). He wrote a series of six pavans played frequently by solo guitarists. The Pavana is a slow processional dance written for ceremonial occasions. This would be a great opportunity to work with the Drama or English classes on a Shakespeare/Renaissance production that includes music. Also, this piece would couple well with Packington’s Pound from Level 3.
